Iodine is a human, animal and plant nutrient and Lugol's solution is an old standby in many home remedy cabinets. We may not be getting the massive goiters like we used in the "goiter belt", but that doesn't mean we are operating our bodies with optimal levels either. Many people and animals are in a "hidden hunger" deficiency. Iodine is highly leachable in the soil, since it is an anion, so heavy rains wash it out of soil. Iodine needs frequent replenishing like other anions such as sulfate, borate, nitrate and choride for optimal nutrition. Please consider that Iodine is the newest announced plant nutrient (once the archaic and inaccurate old plant "nutrient" definition was modified) and all crops supplemented with iodine (in the iodate form) across many studies at reasonable rates have responded with increased quality and yield.
Friends, Iodine is not added in typical farming and gardening (except through kelp) so please supplement a little for yourself. There is not enough in the food supply. Do your own research and remember iodine is one of many nutrients, not a silver-bullet cure all yet is needed by soil microbes, gut microbes, plants, animals and people.
Lugol's is a great form to take for the body as it has the Iodine and Iodide forms of the element and your body needs both forms. I take mine in a cup of water and suck it to the back of my mouth in a straw. That is what I do.
The ideal is to get all nutrients in the food supply but with our cheap food policies we have cheap food with expensive "health" care. We are reaping what we have not amended for in agriculture.
